It had been more than 10 years since the City of Whittlesea had last renovated the Epping Recreation Reserve AFL and cricket fields, and the council had become frustrated with bandaid solutions that were expensive and didn’t last.

The council required a solution that not only met its budget in a short time frame but would also maximise usage and futureproof the fields for years to come. All in time for footy finals!

Joslyn Group is proud to be on the City of Whittlesea’s panel as one of council’s preferred sports field builders. We love working with natural turf and this project gave us the opportunity to use our experience and strong project management skills to help the council build a field that was long-lasting and durable.

Finals come around in the blink of an eye, so we needed get the grass down quick smart so it could establish itself before the business end of the season. 

First, we removed the existing grass surface and disposed of it, then stripped the existing topsoil profile and stored it for reuse. We then shaped the subgrade to design levels so that the ground could drain properly. This is absolutely critical to the success of any turf project, as it ensures an optimal, smooth surface.

The topsoil was put back on the field and we mixed it through with sandy loam to improve the soil for better turf growth. New irrigation and sub-surface drainage were installed, as well as lighting. By providing a full-service solution, including lighting installation, Joslyn Group was able to make life simpler and more efficient for the City of Whittlesea.

And, by having our own equipment at our beck and call, we were able to push through any scheduling issues and make great progress to complete on time.

Delivered in just 26 weeks, including the 12 weeks maintenance period, the AFL-certified field – complete with Cricket Australia approval – was launched in April 2019 to high praise. Epping Recreation Reserve now features a proud new sporting home for the Epping Blues to take home the flag.
